Update: Thanks so much for your support. This was my best year ever! I finished the paddle just over 5 hours and finished 10th out of 60+ charity paddlers. Big differences this year was taking saltsticks during the paddle and the many hours at the gym of long cardio based heart rate sessions. There is no doubt that one of the best sights each year is seeing Colleen and the boys at the end of the race. (You can see the differences in the boys from 2014 to 2017.)

Since mid June, I have been training non-stop to prepare myself for up to 6 hours of paddling around New York City. My good friend Patti M. has been helping me figure out the best approach. Several mornings a week I have been in the gym by 5 AM trying to keep my heart rate in the cardio zone for several hours, sometimes following a cross fit class with a row machine / ski erg session capped by a 1 hour spin class. It's as ugly and awful as it sounds. The other days weather permitting I am paddling out in the Atlantic Ocean and Shark River. 

Last year's paddle was especially grueling. It was hot and my hydration pack emptied too soon. I made the mistake of paddling down the center of the Hudson instead of hugging the NY city shoreline. When the wind turned to the west, I found myself too close to NJ. Worse, I was dehydrated and cramped up - so bad that when I bent down to get something to drink my quads tightened up, making it difficult to stand. 

When I finally pulled into Chelsea Pier, interestingly the doctor recommended I drink vegetable stock instead of gatorade to provide the nutrients I was missing. This year, I have been using salt sticks, which are full of goodness like calcium, magnesium, chloride, potassium, and sodium. I plan to bring these on this year's paddle.
